I recently returned from a trip to Seoul, South Korea where I took part in a photography workshop alongside 13 other talented photographers from 11 different countries. The workshop was organized by the good people from Fotofilmic (@fotofilmic) hosted by The Reference Seoul (@the_reference_seoul) and led by one of my favorite photographers ever, Greg Girard (@gregforaday) (If you follow Third Culture's stories on Instagram, you'll see that I regularly repost Greg's photos🔥). I have never taken part in something like this but when the opportunity came up, I thought I would just apply and luckily I made it through.
The workshop ran over 3 days and consisted firstly of Greg sharing with us his fascinating archives of photos and projects from his 50-year career as a photographer. Hearing the detailed history of these stories, the background of how these photos were made and what techniques, cameras, films used etc was already worth the trip over in itself 🤯 I love watching videos of photographers explaining their art so to listen to Greg break it all down in such a personal environment was priceless. Next, we had each of our portfolios reviewed, which was super nerve-wracking but very valuable.
We were also given a shooting assignment (to be completed by the last day) that Greg "...framed as fictional magazine commissions requiring the production of a narratively tight series of images exploring different facets of the city and its people, to be all tied together later on as a special limited edition JRNL publication guest-edited by himself.” (Fotofilmic) The assignment was difficult but it was a welcomed challenge and I really enjoyed the pressure. We shot the assignment over 2 days and on the last day presented our results and went through a group editing of each of our ‘series’.
BIG-BIG thank you to @gregforaday @fotofilmic and @the_reference_seoul and my fellow 13 other photographers for all the inspiration and friendship over the workshop weekend 🙏🏼 Anyone who is considering doing something like this, out of their comfort zone to further their photography practice, I urge you to fight the fear and 100% do it! I had a great time and come back now feeling genuinely inspired to create and level up 2020!
