Bruce Gilden's 'Untitled' Exhibition at Leica Store Melbourne
Went and visited the newly opened Leica store in Melbourne city this past weekend and checked out Bruce Gilden's in-store exhibition titled 'Untitled'. The exhibition featured Gilden's never before published photographs of infamous Melbourne 'underworld' identity (and businessman), Mick Gatto and his assorted crew. The images were shot in Melbourne in 2011 and printed large at 30 x 40" on Ilford glossy neutral tone paper.
The series is very reminiscent of Gilden's earlier 98'-99' photos shot in Japan, covering the Japanese Yakuza. If you have seen any of those photos, it was definitely shot in the same bold, signature Gilden- style and almost feels like a spiritual sequel, which was a nice surprise for fans of that Yakuza series.
Besides the exhibition, the store itself was also great, staff were super friendly, they have a great selection of photo books to browse through (and a couch to utilize while doing so) and of course, all the latest Leica cameras and accessories on display to play with. Curiously though, there weren't any film cameras on display 🤔 Would be good to see some in the future.
It's great to finally see a Leica store in Melbourne though, check it out if you are local. The exhibition is on display until January 31, 2019. It will then be followed by an exhibition by Austrian photographer, Manfred Baumann.
